Harvest time photo-ops!

When the evenings are cool, the wheat is turning color and the freshly cut alfalfa waiting to be baled smells so sweet, how can you help but take your camera out for a walk? And when you have a cute little girl to put in those pictures....all the better!
(Disclaimer - Trevor did not make all the bales as huge as the one she was standing on...it was just the first bale in the empty baler with no tension on it yet...he's embarrassed that I chose this bale to use in pictures)

We managed to bale 300 second cut alfalfa bales without a drop of rain on them - Daisy will be a happy cow this winter! Many thanks to a couple of Mr.Pauls' who helped us gather and stack them!

Babies - according to Lorelei

One night a couple weeks ago, Lorelei chose a this off the shelf for her bedtime story, I kind of sighed and wondered how I would turn it into a story she would sit still and listen to, but there are many colorful pictures in it, and she pointed at this one:

And said, "Baby"
"Yeah" I said, "that is a baby. Did you know mommy has one of those in her tummy? Do you think it would be nice to have a baby brother or sister?"
She got a very serious look on her face and replied in a concerned but matter of fact tone - "But baby brother die"
I was shocked, I had talked to her about William and tried to explain things, but didn't realized she understood...the rest of the conversation revealed that she had much more understanding than I could imagine and a very real concept in her mind of what all had gone on.
"Yes, you're right he did die..."
"He very sick, big owies.....He went to Heaven....He's an Anjow(angel)....he's a star!" (In the most precious little girl voice ever!).
I nearly cried...to know that he was really in her heart and she actually knew what happened...in her own little girl way...was just so precious to me. I'm not going to argue with a 2.5 year old's theology regarding whether or not he's actually and angel or a star...she obviously thinks of heaven as being in the sky and that's where the stars are...etc... I'm not sure where she got that all from, but the fact that she could articulate it back to me was amazing!
I agreed with her and affirmed what she had said, and asked if she'd like to have another baby brother or sister.
She knit her little eyebrows together and looked very concerned..."But baby die?"
How my heart hurt...I can't promise her this baby won't die...especially when she obviously understands the concept so well. I simply replied "I hope not!" We need to talk about it more yet, as I think it would be a great way to build upon the foundation of her understanding of prayer. Right now we just encourage her to say "Thank you Jesus for...." and encourage her to be thankful. I'd like to talk to her about how we can ask Jesus to take care of our baby, and that WE don't have to worry about it, because He has the baby in His care and His plans.

When moments like this happen, I think of Mary in Luke 2:19 where it says "But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart." Its one of those things that as a mother, I believe will always be in my heart...

July Pictures...only 6 weeks late!

So July was filled with many things - warm sunshine of course and work and lots of green things!

We baled the first cut of hay and picked a whole 107 bales with the stackliner before the chain on the table broke and we had to wait 5 days for parts....the rest of the bales were picked by hand! Thankfully we discovered that the old McKee stackmover is good for yet another thing (see one of my previous posts for how easy it made moving our shed!). When the bales properly stacked, even that old derelict thing with only half the chains on it can unload a perfectly nice stack! We didn't have any building tall enough to unload the picker inside of, so we had to hand stack the bales inside the shed anyways...now we have to hand pick them, but the unloading is done for us....very nice!
July 2011 047 Julie was even nice enough to come help us one night - we got almost 600 square bales of hay from our 7 acres in the first cut.

My garden was growing beautifully - here you see my flower bed that Trevor and I constructed this spring. It is FULL! There are 5 strawberry plants, about 7 or 8 herbs, lettuce, kale, a cucumber plant, 5 tomatoes and a pepper plant, 3 rose bushes, 2 peonies, a ton of irises and some various smaller lilies, a Sedum, 2 day lilies and on the trellises there is a honeysuckle vine and Sadies Horse Beans.

Lorelei enjoyed playing in her wading pool, and chasing around the cats, this particular cat was a pregnant momma that we rescued from the pound. She and Lorelei love each other! She stayed in the house for a few weeks after we got her and she slept on Lolo's bed, and let her do anything with her! She ended up having 5 kittens....on Trevor's pile of socks in the bottom of our closet. I moved her and the kittens outside before their eyes opened, but she still likes to try and get back in the house. Poor Cootie (our original house cat) was her arch nemesis and hasn't been the same since! She still hardly comes out of the basement, because the bad momma kitty (Bagheera) has snuck in a few times and chased her! I haven't taken any pictures of the kittens yet, they're all mainly black - two have white on them and one is kind of dark grey tabby. Lorelei named them - Socks, Boots, Midnight, Charcoal, and Dually (she wanted to name it Julie after Aunty, but I didn't want her saying "Julie Died" if the cat got run over or something, so we compromised!). Bagheera is so aggressive with all the other cats and even the dogs, its crazy, yet she is perfectly nice and gentle to Lolo, even when being carried around by her neck! She might find a new home when the kitties are big enough, just to keep the peace with the other cats!

I finally set up my hammock...after it hung in the garage since we moved here almost 3 years ago! I got a couple tiki torches with citronella oil in hopes of keeping the mosquitoes at bay to some extent, but it wasn't terribly effective! I should be out there wrapped in a blanket right now, no bugs! Too bad my laptop battery is shot and I'm tied to the plug-in! Just looking at it is relaxing some days though, its always in the shade and even a minute or two just hanging there is a nice break the odd time that I do use it!
July 2011 062
It was so wet this spring that even these ground cover plants on the North side of the house grew like crazy - I've never seen them so tall!

July 2011 069
"DellOliver Bigger" Lorelei always declares if anyone asks her about her piggies. She's very glad to tell anyone she meets that she has piggies, and has been known to confuse a few people, they think she's talking about her pigtails or something, I have to back her up and say, "No, she really does have pigs". They're much bigger now, though they're still going to be pretty late to butcher, I'm looking forward to good pork!

Lorelei LOVES to ride horseys...here she is on "Rattia" (Riata in Lolospeak).
July 2011 206
This was my purchase from the consignment sale - for $50...good firebox and everything...I'm pretty excited about putting it in the yellow shed for a summer kitchen!

Little E had a nap in my hammock while I picked raspberries!
July 2011 096
I found this in my raspberry patch...and they're obviously abandoned as I watched the area for a week...I found them in late July, so I brought the nest in now, and I'm hoping/planning to preserve it in a glass shadow box type thing for future educational use!
July 2011 092
E LOVES potato chips!
July 2011 089
We ate 5 lovely eggplants off my two plants this year...first time eating eggplant for me, I'll definitely try growing it again next year, its a beautiful plant too!

July 2011 203
We also went to the Threshermen's reunion in Austin Lolo loved all the tractors!

Summertime Neglect

As usually happens over the summer, my blogging has been pretty sporadic...well, lets be honest, it almost always is that way, hopefully some of the posts are worth waiting for! I have much to share, and I am tempted to just do one long rambling marathon of a post, but I'm going to be disciplined and make things more concise, while I'd love to share the pictures I took when I did the last blog post - they're kind of out of date now...they showed how beautiful and green all the young plants were around the yard...maybe I should share them anyways...I also have a really sweet and special story to share about Lorelei and some recent pictures and some recipes and...and...and....Ok, I'll get started now!

Moving along

When a co-worker moves to town, completely renovates the house they move into and can't stand looking at the nice old shed in the backyard - what do you do when they ask if you want it? Say "YES" of course... An insulated, lined, wired shed - 10'x14' with a walk-in door, a small over head door, and two windows....for FREE? Well of course we want it...especially since this is currently the shed over our well house -
July 2011 076

Yes - it is on quite a slant...just from 2 corral panels leaning against it...its in DIRE need of replacement - what could be better!?

So on the appointed Saturday, one would take their child to spend the morning with Grandma, load up the truck with blocks, jacks, straps, screws, drills, measuring tapes and whatever else might be needed; hook the tractor up to the stack-mover and mosey into town. In a few minutes there would be a shed on a trailer and away we'd go home again right? Well...in a perfect world maybe...instead...this is how it went:

We DID drop Lolo off at Grandma's, and made it down to B & L's by 9am as we planned...we got the front of the shed jacked up with little difficulty...
July 2011 031
But you may notice that the bottom of the shed is still far below the trailer...
July 2011 032
This is because the neighbors next door are building a new house and have done a bunch of dirt work in the yard, which for now, make their yard a lot lower than B & L's yard...and even with the stack mover fully tilted, we couldn't get it anywhere near the ground!

So...we got a little creative...
July 2011 034

But it still was not enough!
That was the only side of the shed that we could get in straight on, so, we backed the trailer in as close to straight as we could on the south side, and then...
July 2011 035
We wrapped 3 tow straps around the building, had it up on several long timbers and pulled it around square with the trailer.
July 2011 036
Now that it was square with the trailer, they felt the need to screw a couple 2x6's on underneath to brace the floor so the chains on the stack mover wouldn't just pull on the first floor beam and pull it out from under the shed...
July 2011 037
Notice there are just two feet showing...that is my husband under there...

And now for the moment of truth:
July 2011 038
UP...
July 2011 040
UP...
July 2011 041
On...ready to go...
July 2011 042
And Away...
July 2011 075
Home sweet home....
This is not actually the final resting place however...we need to build a foundation and get the wiring/electrical disconnected from the old building, then move this into place....someday!?

We're very happy to have this building...I think it will lose its yellow hue. Any suggestions on what color to go with? I think it will probably end up white with a green tin roof, like we have purchased for the rest of the buildings.

In its final resting place this building will serve many functions. It will be over the well, it will be right next to the planned cattle chute - so when we're doctoring or loading cattle, we'll have a protected place to keep records, medication or kids :), it will likely be home for the lawnmower - thanks to the small overhead door...and/or it will be the tack shed for our horse stuff....time will tell!

Summer fun

A couple weekends ago my SIL had her family visiting from the states and was kind enough to invite us all over for a grand BBQ on Saturday evening. It was a perfect evening and the kids had a ton of fun playing in the back yard. The bigger kids ran down to the park and played HARD and we enjoyed a TON of great food and good conversation. There's not much for pictures besides Lorelei...what can I say, I tend to watch her a lot, so I take a lot of pictures of her!

The other day I found the cutest ever hat at Superstore of all places... My sweet little girl is modeling it while enjoying the simple things in country life - a stick and a nice apple for a snack!

Cousin Liam found a BIGGER stick!
July 2011 026

A little stray kitten showed up while we were visiting outside one Sunday afternoon after meeting....very cute and playful, but not real healthy!
July 2011 028

Oh yes, summer fun would not be complete for Trevor unless this was pictured...probably more than once would be his preference, but this is my blog right? Here's one of the tractors - this one is going to be in the Bill Klassen Auctions Annual Consignment sale on the August long weekend
July 2011 002 Bye Bye #8....er is that #9? I can't remember which is which anymore! We just call this one Daviduck...
